Professional Development - Parents, Children & Literacy

Parents, Children & Literacy™

This course is based on research that supports the importance of parental involvement in the literacy development of their children. At Rigby, we recognize that parents are their child's first teachers and we believe that continuing literacy development in the home is vital. This award-winning workshop links home to school and parent to child to teacher. It provides parents with opportunities to learn more about comprehensive literacy and to understand their role in helping their children to succeed.

The Parents, Children & Literacy™ course is also available in spanish to offer literacy support to bilingual children and their families.

Delivery Models :

The Parents, Children & Literacy™ workshop is designed as a turnkey program that can be facilitated by your own district or school staff developers. Each session begins with parents and children working together in an introductory activity. Then the parents meet with a facilitator while the children participate in literacy-related activities with a co-facilitator.

As a result of this course, parents will be able to:
  • Understand the importance of their involvement with their children's education
  • Increase their understanding of their role in the literacy development of their children
  • Learn effective strategies that are used to teach children how to read and write
  • Have opportunities to practice strategies with their children
  • Demonstrate use of students to inform teaching
  • Extend range of approaches used to teach and assess students' reading, writing, and learning
